An original founding anthem and newly published mission and vision introduce a music-driven movement dedicated to mental health awareness, empathy, expression, connection, and meaningful movement.

MAINE — What if music could do more than entertain? What if the same rhythm that gets someone tapping their foot could also encourage understanding, inspire compassion, or help someone take a meaningful step forward?
That question is at the heart of Music Moves Me, a creative initiative I founded with a purpose that extends far beyond music itself.
Before going any further, I want to be transparent about something important.
I am both the author of this article and the founder of the initiative being introduced.
This is not independent reporting about an unrelated organization. It is a firsthand introduction to something I have personally created, written from my perspective as its founder and as the editor-in-chief of The Maine Mirror.
I believe that distinction matters.
The same commitment to transparency and accountability that guides my journalism should apply when I use this platform to discuss my own work.
And while Music Moves Me may appear different from investigative journalism, community advocacy, or the other projects I have developed, the motivation behind them is fundamentally the same.
H.O.P.E. — Helping Other People Empathetically.
Whether through The Maine Mirror, Together We Grow, Music Moves Me, or any number of other projects I engage in, H.O.P.E. remains my guiding star.
The methods may change. The platforms may differ. The audiences may not always overlap.
But the purpose remains.
To use whatever skills, experiences, creativity, and opportunities I have to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others.
Music Moves Me is one more expression of that commitment.
And today, I want to invite you to understand what I am building, why I am building it, and how you can become part of it.
More Than a Song
Music Moves Me is built around a simple understanding: music can reach people in ways ordinary conversation sometimes cannot.
A song might encourage someone to dance. Another might help someone recognize an emotion they’ve struggled to describe. Another might remind someone that their experiences, however isolating, do not diminish their humanity.
I believe music has a remarkable ability to create opportunities for connection.
But I also believe we have a responsibility to be thoughtful about the promises we make.
Music Moves Me does not claim that music cures mental health conditions, resolves trauma, or works the same way for everyone.
Instead, its purpose is to use music as an accessible language for mental health awareness, empathy, emotional expression, human connection, and meaningful movement.
And when I say movement, I mean far more than dancing.
Movement can be physical, emotional, mental, or social.
It can mean reaching out to someone, asking for support, reflecting on an experience, or finding enough encouragement to take another meaningful step.
At the same time, I want the music itself to be genuinely enjoyable.
I want people to hear a song and instinctively feel its rhythm.
I want the basslines to groove, the instrumentation to surprise, and the arrangements to immerse listeners in an experience that is both entertaining and meaningful.
Not every song will sound alike.
Each will have its own musical identity, intentionally shaped around the primary emotion and mental health condition it explores.
But every song will share something recognizable.
Music Moves Me.
Those three words are more than a title.
They are an invitation.
The Founding Mission and Vision
To establish a clear foundation for Music Moves Me, I developed a three-page document outlining its mission, vision, five founding pillars, creative commitments, and guiding philosophy.
The mission is to use music as an accessible language for mental health awareness, empathy, emotional expression, human connection, and meaningful movement, meeting people where they are without judgment or promises of a cure.
The vision is a world where music helps people recognize their shared humanity, where mental health conversations are met with compassion, and where everyone can find an invitation to take their next meaningful step.
At the center of the document is an illustration of an open hand.
Each finger represents one of five founding pillars.
And in the palm rests the principle connecting them all:
H.O.P.E. — Helping Other People Empathetically.
I chose the helping hand intentionally.
Because when I consider the challenges people face, whether through mental health struggles, isolation, hardship, or simply trying to navigate everyday life, I keep returning to one belief.
We do not always need extraordinary resources or perfect answers to make a difference.
Sometimes, what someone needs most is to know that another person sees them.

Five Pillars. Five Fingers. One Helping Hand.
The five pillars represent the principles I intend to carry through every Music Moves Me creation.
1. Awareness — Understanding Begins With Recognition
We cannot begin to understand what we refuse to recognize.
Through music, I want to bring attention to mental health conditions, emotions, and human experiences that are too often unseen, misunderstood, or dismissed.
Every person has a story beyond what others can observe.
2. Empathy — Seek to Understand Before Seeking to Be Understood
We do not have to experience another person’s struggles to recognize their humanity.
Empathy begins with listening, respecting lived experiences, and offering compassion without demanding that someone justify their pain.
3. Expression — Every Emotion Deserves a Voice
Not every feeling comes with the right words.
Sometimes music can help us recognize, explore, or express something we have struggled to communicate.
I want Music Moves Me to create room for those experiences without judgment.
4. Connection — Different Experiences, Shared Humanity
Our experiences may be different, but that does not mean we cannot understand, support, or learn from one another.
Music has the potential to create shared moments between people who might otherwise never connect.
5. Movement — Every Step Forward Matters
Movement does not have to be dramatic to be meaningful.
It might be dancing to a song. It might be having a difficult conversation. It might be reaching out for support.
And sometimes, simply making it through another day is meaningful progress.
These pillars are not a checklist or a sequence someone must complete.
They are interconnected opportunities to meet people wherever they are.
H.O.P.E.: The Guiding Star Behind My Work
I want to spend a moment explaining why H.O.P.E. matters to me personally.
Because this is not simply an acronym I created for a music project.
It represents the philosophy I want guiding everything I do.
Helping Other People Empathetically.
My experiences have shaped how I understand hardship, advocacy, accountability, and the importance of being heard.
They have also reinforced something I believe deeply: we cannot always control the challenges people face, but we can make intentional choices about how we respond to one another.
That belief is part of why I founded The Maine Mirror.
I believe journalism should seek truth, demand accountability, and give people opportunities to examine information that affects their lives.
It is also part of why I created Together We Grow, why I continue developing other community-centered projects, and why Music Moves Me now exists.
These initiatives may look different on the surface.
One may involve public records and investigative reporting.
Another may involve music, creativity, and mental health awareness.
Others may focus on connection, entertainment, education, or community engagement.
But I do not see them as disconnected efforts.
I see them as different ways of pursuing the same underlying purpose.
To help other people empathetically.
That does not mean I always have the answers.
It does not mean every idea will succeed or that every decision I make will be perfect.
It means I want the motivation behind my work to remain grounded in humanity, compassion, and a willingness to keep learning.
And I believe readers deserve to understand that motivation, particularly when I am using a publication I founded to introduce another initiative of my own.
Introducing the Founding Anthem: A Helping Hand
Alongside the founding document, I am introducing the first Music Moves Me anthem, A Helping Hand.
This song is more than a musical announcement.
It is intended to be a real-time demonstration of the very movement it introduces.
I wanted to create something that didn’t simply tell listeners what Music Moves Me stands for, but invited them to experience its purpose through rhythm, storytelling, emotion, and participation.
The result is an original, groove-driven composition that blends funk-inspired basslines, soulful vocals, expressive saxophone, electronic instrumentation, and immersive musical arrangements.
Its musical character is intentionally playful, energetic, and unpredictable, while its message remains grounded in compassion and humanity.
The song speaks directly to the listener, occasionally breaking the traditional boundary between performer and audience.
It begins with a simple question:
“When’s the last time a song made you feel something you couldn’t quite explain?”
And then comes a playful observation:
“And don’t look now… Your foot’s already moving.”
That moment captures something central to Music Moves Me.
Before the listener has been given a formal explanation of the initiative, the music is already inviting them to participate.
The rhythm becomes part of the message.
A Musical Journey Through the Five Pillars
As the song unfolds, its lyrics intentionally introduce the five founding pillars through observations about everyday human experiences.
Awareness emerges through the recognition that people often carry struggles others cannot see.
Empathy challenges listeners to understand that compassion does not require identical experiences.
Expression is demonstrated through the relationship between emotion, melody, and rhythm, including the idea that music can communicate what words sometimes cannot.
Connection develops through the recognition that different people, with different stories, can still share meaningful human experiences.
And Movement becomes both the song’s musical foundation and its invitation to the audience.
The lyrics reinforce that movement does not have to look the same for everyone.
For some, it may mean dancing.
For others, it may mean reflection, conversation, or reaching out for support.
Throughout the composition, the recurring words “Music Moves Me” serve as an intentionally recognizable musical hook.
I want those words to become familiar across future songs, even as the genres, instruments, emotions, and musical arrangements continue to evolve.
The Moment the Song Speaks Back
One of my favorite creative elements is the way the song occasionally interrupts itself to speak directly to the listener.
At one point, it asks:
“Wait, wait, wait… Did you catch what just happened?”
The song then reflects on the experience that has already unfolded.
What began as a question has become an opportunity for understanding.
The listener is no longer simply hearing about empathy, expression, and connection.
They are being invited to recognize those ideas within the experience of listening.
The song eventually introduces the open-hand symbolism and H.O.P.E., connecting the music to the founding framework.
And then comes the invitation I consider central to the entire project:
“I don’t want to build a movement where you only watch the start. I want to build it with you.”
Those words represent exactly what I hope Music Moves Me becomes.
Not simply a collection of songs that people listen to, but something people feel welcome to participate in.
Listen: Music Moves Me — A Helping Hand
The song below is the founding musical introduction to Music Moves Me.
I encourage you to listen not only to the lyrics, but also to the rhythm, instrumentation, transitions, and the way the song engages directly with you.
Notice how the music invites physical movement while the words explore emotional and human connection.
And most importantly, consider what the message means to you.

A Different Approach to Mental Health Awareness
Music Moves Me is intended to grow beyond one founding anthem.
Future songs will explore different primary emotions and mental health conditions, with their musical styles and storytelling intentionally adapted to each subject.
A song exploring fear may sound entirely different from one exploring joy, grief, hope, or loneliness.
But I want every song to maintain a recognizable commitment to creative, infectious grooves and meaningful emotional storytelling.
I want people to enjoy the music because it is good music.
And if that same music helps someone feel understood, recognize another person’s experience, or find a moment of connection, then it has served an additional purpose.
I also want to be clear about what Music Moves Me is not.
It is not a replacement for professional mental health care.
It is not a promise that music will make someone’s struggles disappear.
And it is not an attempt to tell people how they should feel.
It is an invitation to move, in whatever way is meaningful to the person listening.
No pressure. No judgment. No expectation of perfection.
Just an opportunity.
I Don’t Want to Build This Alone
There is one final point I want readers to understand.
I am introducing Music Moves Me as its founder, but I do not want its future to be defined by my voice alone.
I want to build something that creates room for other people’s experiences, perspectives, creativity, and ideas.
Something that encourages participation rather than passive observation.
Something where people can discover music they genuinely enjoy while also encountering messages that encourage understanding and compassion.
And something that continues evolving through the people who choose to become part of it.
That is the invitation behind A Helping Hand.
You do not need to be a musician.
You do not need to share my experiences or perspectives.
You do not need to have a particular mental health condition.
And you certainly do not need to have all the answers.
The starting point is simply a willingness to recognize that every person has a story worth understanding.
For me, that is where meaningful change begins.
Whether I am asking difficult questions through The Maine Mirror, creating music through Music Moves Me, or developing another project intended to bring people together, I want to remain guided by the same principle.
H.O.P.E. — Helping Other People Empathetically.
Not because I believe I can change the entire world.
But because I believe we can make a difference in someone’s world.
And I would like nothing more than to build something meaningful with you.
Five pillars. Five fingers. One helping hand.
Sometimes, all the world needs is a helping hand.
Music Moves Me. Does it move you?
