The Maine Mirror is adding a new way for readers to follow our reporting: by listening.

As The Maine Mirror continues to grow, we have officially established a presence on X at @themainemirror. But this isn’t intended to simply become another social-media account where we copy and paste links to stories already published elsewhere.

We’re giving it a purpose.

Going forward, investigative articles published by The Maine Mirror will be accompanied by a Mirror Brief — a short audio summary designed to introduce the reporting, explain the central documented facts, and give listeners an overview of what they’ll find in the full article.

And X will serve as the primary home for the series.

What Is a Mirror Brief?

The idea is simple.

Not everyone has the time to stop what they’re doing and read a lengthy investigative article, work through a timeline, or examine pages of supporting records.

A Mirror Brief provides another entry point.

Each brief will generally run only a few minutes and answer the most important introductory questions:

What happened? What records did we examine? What does the reporting establish? And what questions remain unanswered?

The brief isn’t intended to replace the article.

It’s intended to introduce it.

The full reporting will continue to live at TheMaineMirror.com, where readers can examine the broader context, source material, correspondence, timelines, recordings and other documentation supporting our work.

Why X?

The decision to establish the series on X is intentional.

X is built around public conversations unfolding in real time and supports posts containing text, links, images and video. The platform also supports captions for uploaded video, which gives us opportunities to make Mirror Briefs accessible beyond audio alone. Help Center

For The Maine Mirror, that creates an opportunity to use the platform differently.

Rather than asking someone to leave X before they understand why a story matters, a Mirror Brief can provide the essential context directly within their feed.

Those interested in going deeper can then follow the accompanying link to the complete reporting and examine the evidence themselves.

Our investigative reporting isn’t changing.

When something is documented, we’ll tell you what the record shows.

And when additional context matters, the full article will be there for anyone who wants to dig deeper.
