GORHAM, Maine — What began in July as an examination of how the Gorham Democrats publicly communicated during a developing controversy involving Graham Platner has now produced another documented chapter.
On July 6, The Maine Mirror published a timeline analysis examining the organization’s public Facebook communications surrounding Platner’s postponed Gorham appearance, subsequent allegations involving the candidate, and the moderation of two Platner-related posts.
The reporting identified an unusual pattern: the two Platner-related posts reviewed by The Maine Mirror appeared to have comments disabled, while a review of hundreds of other recent posts on the page did not identify another comparable example.
That observation raised questions. It did not establish why the moderation occurred or whether anything improper had taken place.
Two days later, The Maine Mirror documented another development: the original Facebook post announcing Platner’s postponed appearance appeared to no longer be publicly available.
Again, The Maine Mirror did not claim to know why.
Instead, the publication preserved the available records and sought answers directly from the Gorham Democrats.
More than two months later, the underlying questions remain unanswered. But a September 14 follow-up has now established where the Gorham Democrats say those questions should be directed next: the Maine Democratic Party.
The original request for answers
On July 8, The Maine Mirror formally contacted the Gorham Democrats seeking comment regarding the developments documented through its reporting.
The inquiry focused on two issues: the apparent removal or unavailability of the original Platner postponement post and the apparent blocking of Editor-in-Chief Ryan Michaels’ Facebook account from accessing the Gorham Democrats’ page.
The Maine Mirror asked five questions:
- Was the original postponement post intentionally removed or otherwise made unavailable to the public?
- If so, what was the reason for its removal or change in availability?
- Was Michaels’ Facebook account intentionally blocked from the Gorham Democrats’ page?
- If so, what was the reason for that decision?
- Was there any additional context the organization wanted readers to know?
The request provided an opportunity to respond before further reporting was published and made clear that responses received after the requested deadline would still be incorporated into a subsequent update.

“I’ve forwarded your request”
The Gorham Democrats responded that same morning.
At 10:53 a.m., the organization wrote:
“I’ve forwarded your request for comment to the Maine Democratic Party.”
The message acknowledged the inquiry but did not answer the five questions.
(The Gorham Democrats’ July 8, 2026 response stating that The Maine Mirror’s request for comment had been forwarded to the Maine Democratic Party.)
The Maine Mirror did not subsequently receive a substantive response from the Maine Democratic Party.
The matter remained there for more than two months.
The Maine Mirror returns to the unanswered questions
On September 14, The Maine Mirror followed up.
At 4:09 p.m., Michaels wrote to the Gorham Democrats, referencing their July statement that the request had been forwarded to the Maine Democratic Party and noting that no substantive response had been received since.
The follow-up again identified the issues at the center of the inquiry: the apparent removal or unavailability of the Platner-related post and the apparent blocking of Michaels’ account.
Before determining whether to publish another update, The Maine Mirror offered the Maine Democratic Party and/or Gorham Democrats another opportunity to respond or provide additional context.
The email also made clear that if the party simply did not intend to comment, confirmation of that would be appreciated.
(The Maine Mirror’s September 14, 2026 follow-up documenting the July referral, the absence of a substantive response, and an additional opportunity for the Gorham Democrats or Maine Democratic Party to comment.)
This time, the response came almost immediately.
“Reach out directly to the MDP”
At 4:11 p.m. — approximately two minutes after The Maine Mirror’s follow-up — the Gorham Democrats replied:
“I would reach out directly to the MDP. Thank you.”
The email was signed by Heather Robinson, identifying herself as Chair of the Gorham Democratic Committee.
(The Gorham Democrats’ September 14 response directing The Maine Mirror to contact the Maine Democratic Party directly. The email identifies Heather Robinson as Chair of the Gorham Democratic Committee.)
Rather than pressing the local committee further, Michaels thanked Robinson for the quick response and asked for the appropriate contact information.
At 4:13 p.m., he wrote:
“Would you happen to have a specific point of contact or email address at the Maine Democratic Party that you would recommend I direct the request to?”
(The Maine Mirror’s 4:13 p.m. response thanking the Gorham Democrats for the quick reply and requesting a specific Maine Democratic Party point of contact or email address.)
Two minutes later, Robinson responded again.
“Unfortunately not, it would be this email: press@mainedems.org.”
(The Gorham Democrats’ 4:15 p.m. response providing press@mainedems.org as the email address for The Maine Mirror to use in contacting the Maine Democratic Party.)
What the record establishes
Taken together, the correspondence establishes a straightforward sequence.
The Maine Mirror submitted specific questions to the Gorham Democrats in July. The organization acknowledged receiving them and said the request had been forwarded to the Maine Democratic Party.
The Maine Mirror did not subsequently receive a substantive response from the state party.
More than two months later, The Maine Mirror returned to the Gorham Democrats and provided another opportunity to address the questions. This time, the local committee responded within minutes, directed the publication to contact the Maine Democratic Party directly, and provided the state party’s press email address.
That is what the documentary record establishes.
Just as important is what it does not establish.
The correspondence does not establish why the original Facebook post became unavailable.
It does not independently establish whether Michaels’ account was intentionally blocked, who may have initiated any restriction, when such a decision may have been made, or why.
And it does not establish what role, if any, the Maine Democratic Party played in either matter.
An unanswered question is not evidence of its answer.
That distinction has guided The Maine Mirror’s reporting on this issue from the beginning.
The inquiry now moves to the Maine Democratic Party
The September 14 exchange provides something the July correspondence did not: a direct press address supplied by the Gorham Democratic Committee for continuing the inquiry.
The outstanding questions can now be presented directly to the Maine Democratic Party.
The state party will have an opportunity to clarify whether it has any knowledge of or involvement in the circumstances surrounding the Facebook post and apparent account restriction.
If those decisions were made exclusively at the local committee level and without the Maine Democratic Party’s involvement, the state party will likewise have an opportunity to make that distinction clear.
The Maine Mirror will update this reporting if additional information or a substantive response is received.
For now, the record establishes what was observed, what was asked, when it was asked, where the questions were directed and what responses were received.
More than two months after the original inquiry, the underlying questions remain unanswered.
