CUMBERLAND COUNTY, Maine — Stephanie Anderson, a candidate for Cumberland County District Attorney in the 2026 election, has provided The Maine Mirror with detailed answers about her campaign, her priorities for the District Attorney’s Office and why she believes voters should return her to a position she previously held for 28 years.
On July 25, 2026, The Maine Mirror published a Candidate Spotlight introducing Anderson and providing Cumberland County voters with an overview of her candidacy.
As part of its 2026 election coverage, The Maine Mirror posed five questions designed to give Anderson an opportunity to explain directly to voters why she is running, what she considers the county’s most important issues, what she would seek to accomplish if elected and how residents should hold her accountable.
Anderson subsequently provided detailed responses to all five questions.
Rather than summarize those responses or select individual quotations, The Maine Mirror is publishing Anderson’s answers in full and verbatim, allowing Cumberland County voters to read her positions in her own words.
The questions below are those presented by The Maine Mirror. Anderson’s responses are reproduced as provided by the candidate.
Why is Stephanie Anderson running for Cumberland County District Attorney?
Anderson previously served as Cumberland County District Attorney for 28 years. Her decision to seek the office again therefore raises an important question for voters: after nearly three decades in the position and several years away from it, why does she want to return?
The Maine Mirror asked Anderson what prompted her decision to enter the 2026 Cumberland County District Attorney race and what inspired her to seek the office again.
The Maine Mirror asked:
Question 1
Stephanie Anderson:

What issues does Anderson believe are most important to Cumberland County?
The Cumberland County District Attorney’s Office makes decisions that can affect crime victims, defendants, law enforcement agencies, courts, treatment providers, businesses, families and communities throughout the county.
The Maine Mirror asked Anderson to identify the three issues she considers most important to the people she hopes to represent and explain how she would address them as District Attorney.
The Maine Mirror asked:
Question 2
Stephanie Anderson:

What would Stephanie Anderson prioritize if elected District Attorney?
Campaign principles ultimately have to translate into decisions, policies and measurable priorities once a candidate takes office.
With Anderson seeking to return to an office she previously led for decades, The Maine Mirror asked what she would specifically seek to accomplish during her first term back as Cumberland County District Attorney.
The Maine Mirror asked:
Question 3
Stephanie Anderson:

How does Anderson believe Cumberland County voters should hold her accountable?
Accountability does not end on Election Day.
For an elected District Attorney, voters can evaluate not only campaign promises but also the performance of the office, its relationship with the public and criminal justice partners, its treatment of victims and defendants, and the decisions made under the District Attorney’s leadership.
The Maine Mirror asked Anderson what standards Cumberland County residents should use to evaluate her performance if she is elected.
The Maine Mirror asked:
Question 4
Stephanie Anderson:

What else does Stephanie Anderson want Cumberland County voters to know?
The final question in The Maine Mirror’s Candidate Spotlight is intentionally broad.
Candidates spend much of an election answering questions selected by journalists, opponents, moderators and political organizations. An open-ended final question gives candidates an opportunity to identify something they believe voters should consider that may not emerge through traditional campaign coverage.
For that reason, The Maine Mirror gave Anderson the final word.
The Maine Mirror asked:
Question 5
Stephanie Anderson:

Stephanie Anderson and the 2026 Cumberland County District Attorney Race
Anderson’s responses provide Cumberland County voters with a direct account of how she views the role of District Attorney and what she believes should distinguish her candidacy in the 2026 election.
There is also an important distinction between reporting about a political candidate and providing voters an opportunity to hear directly from that candidate.
Both have a role in election coverage.
The Maine Mirror will continue reporting on candidates, public records, policy positions and issues surrounding the 2026 Cumberland County District Attorney election. When candidates respond directly to questions from The Maine Mirror, their answers also provide voters with primary-source material they can evaluate for themselves.
In this case, Anderson’s responses address public safety, leadership within the District Attorney’s Office, criminal justice policy, treatment and rehabilitation, victims, prosecutorial accountability and her reasons for seeking a return to office.
The conclusions belong to Cumberland County voters.
