WATERVILLE, Maine — State Representative Flavia DeBrito announced Wednesday that she will not seek another term on the Waterville City Council, bringing to a close nearly seven years representing Ward 2 while reaffirming her intention to continue serving in the Maine House of Representatives.
In a public statement shared on social media, DeBrito described the decision as a difficult one, saying her daughters are entering high school and that she wants to be fully present during what she called “one of the most important years of their lives.”
“Family has always been at the center of why I serve, and right now they need me most,” DeBrito wrote.
While stepping away from municipal office, DeBrito made clear that her commitment to public service remains unchanged. She stated that she intends to continue serving in the Maine House of Representatives and is seeking re-election to represent House District 64.
Throughout her announcement, DeBrito reflected on her years serving the people of Ward 2, expressing gratitude to residents who supported and challenged her, as well as fellow council members and mayors with whom she worked over the years.
A Reflection from The Maine Mirror
At The Maine Mirror, our role is not to tell readers who they should support at the ballot box. That decision belongs to each voter.
Our responsibility is to recognize moments that contribute to healthier public service, regardless of political party.
DeBrito’s announcement stood out not because she is stepping away from one elected office, but because of the way she explained that decision.
Rather than offering a carefully crafted political message, she openly acknowledged the competing responsibilities that many public servants face between serving their communities and being present for their families. She expressed gratitude for those she has served, explained her reasoning without attacking anyone else, and remained transparent about her intention to continue serving Maine in another capacity.
Whether readers ultimately agree with her policies or choose to support her candidacy is a separate question entirely.
What deserves recognition is the willingness to communicate openly, to acknowledge personal priorities honestly, and to explain a public decision in a way that invites understanding rather than speculation.
Those qualities—transparency, humility, gratitude, and service—are values The Maine Mirror believes strengthen public trust regardless of political affiliation.
If more conversations in public life began with honesty and respect for the people being served, our communities would all benefit.
