By Ryan Michaels | The Maine Mirror

People often ask me why I created The Maine Mirror.

The answer isn’t politics. It isn’t clicks. It isn’t money.

It’s my children.

For more than two years, my family has lived through a reality where I believe truth, transparency, and accountability have been absent from our story. Whatever history ultimately records, the consequence has been undeniable: a relationship between a father and his children has been lost with each passing day.

That lived experience changed me.

I could have allowed it to make me bitter. Instead, I chose to let it become the foundation for something bigger than myself.

The Maine Mirror was born from the belief that communities deserve better. Better conversations. Better questions. Better accountability. Better compassion.

Not because people should always agree, but because every person deserves to be heard fairly.

My hope has never been to create another partisan outlet or another platform fueled by outrage. There are already enough voices telling us why we should hate one another.

I want The Maine Mirror to remind us why we should listen to one another.

Every article, every candidate spotlight, every local meeting, every public records request, every story we publish is another step toward that mission.

In many ways, The Maine Mirror is also something I’m building for my sons.

One day, whether they’re still children or grown men, I hope they’ll be able to look back and see that when life became unimaginably difficult, I didn’t give up. I chose to build something that tried to leave the world better than I found it.

If they choose to walk a similar path someday, I hope they’ll know this platform was never built for recognition. It was built in service to others.

Our family’s truth may have been denied.

But truth itself was never erased.

Today marks another milestone in that journey.

Today, the Truth Train begins its ride.

It isn’t fueled by anger. It’s powered by hope, perseverance, and the belief that truth has a way of reaching its destination, even when the journey is long.

And from this day forward, it keeps moving.

Always forward.

Toward a future where communities are stronger.

Toward greater transparency and accountability.

Toward more compassion than division.

And toward the day I can hold my boys again.

Whether that day comes while they’re still children or after they’ve become men, they will always know this:

I never stopped believing.

I never stopped loving them.

And I never stopped moving forward.
