KENNEBUNK, Maine — As Maine’s 2026 election season continues, The Maine Mirror is highlighting candidates from across the political spectrum to help voters learn more about the people seeking to represent them in Augusta.
Today’s Candidate Spotlight features Rep. Dan Sayre, the Democratic nominee for Maine State Senate District 34.
What You Should Know
Rep. Dan Sayre currently represents House District 135 in the Maine House of Representatives. He assumed office on December 6, 2022, is serving his second term in the Legislature, and is not seeking re-election to his House seat. Instead, Sayre is running for Maine State Senate District 34 and advanced from the Democratic primary on June 9, 2026. He will appear on the ballot in the November 3, 2026 general election.
According to his campaign, Sayre is running for the Maine Senate because he believes “Mainers deserve leaders who prioritize results over politics and always put people first.”
Before entering public service, Sayre spent 35 years in book publishing specializing in scientific and technical disciplines for professionals and college students. His career includes serving as president of New World Associates, LLC, executive editor of engineering and geosciences with Oxford University Press, executive marketing manager with John Wiley & Sons, Inc., vice president and publisher of Island Press, and as a consultant.
Sayre earned a Bachelor of Arts in History from Yale University in 1985. He has also been affiliated with the Rotary Club, the Chamber of Commerce, the Brick Store Museum, the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE), the ASEE Workforce Summit, and the Town of Kennebunk Budget Board.
In the Legislature, Sayre serves as House Chair of the Taxation Committee. According to his legislative biography, he is passionate about growing and diversifying Maine’s economy, fostering greater collaboration between education, business, and policymakers, and building inclusive communities where every Mainer can thrive.
His campaign states that during his time in the House he has worked to strengthen education, bring down costs, and help neighbors not just get by, but get ahead. Looking ahead, he says he hopes to be a champion for York County families by working to ensure every Mainer can live, work, and age with grace in Maine.
